Snapdrop.net shut down. Its fork PairDrop still requires the same WiFi. chirpfile works across any network, encrypts everything, and runs in the browser.

What went wrong with Snapdrop
Snapdrop.net shut down
The original Snapdrop stopped working in 2023. The developer couldn't keep up with server costs and abuse. PairDrop is a community fork that's still running, but has the same fundamental limitations.
Same WiFi requirement
Both Snapdrop and PairDrop use WebRTC with local network discovery. If devices are on different networks, they don't exist to each other. chirpfile works across any network.
No real encryption
Snapdrop/PairDrop use WebRTC's built-in TLS, but the signaling server can see file metadata and the connection isn't zero-knowledge. chirpfile encrypts files in your browser before upload. The server only sees ciphertext.
Files stay on the receiving device
Snapdrop saves received files to the device with no auto-deletion. chirpfile deletes files from the relay immediately after download.
Try it now
Open chirpfile.com on two devices and send a file.
Snapdrop.net went offline in 2023. The project was open source, so it was forked as PairDrop. PairDrop works the same way but is maintained by the community.
Is PairDrop safe?
PairDrop uses WebRTC for direct file transfer with TLS encryption in transit. However, the signaling server handles connection setup and isn't zero-knowledge. chirpfile's server never sees your decryption key or file contents.
Why can't Snapdrop/PairDrop find my device?
They rely on local network discovery. If your WiFi has AP isolation (hotels, airports, offices), uses a VPN, or devices are on different networks, discovery won't work. chirpfile doesn't need local discovery.
Is chirpfile free?
Free for files up to 15 MB. Pro ($0.99/day or $4.99/month) supports files up to 1 GB.
